Avoiding Sixth Mass Extinction requires Quick, Intensified Efforts
Scientists think that earth is believed to have entered the sixth great extinction. They have said so as species are dying at an alarming rate and the culprit for the same is no one else but human beings.
Researchers have affirmed that in order to avoid the sixth mass extinction there is a need for stringent and consistent efforts to save already threatened species. The researchers said, "Assuming a highly conservative background rate of 2 mammal extinctions per 10,000 species per 100 years (2E/MSY), the average rate of vertebrate species loss over the last century has been up to 114 times higher than the background rate".
With rise in human population, their consumption level has also increased. They have been held liable for destroying natural habitats through land clearing for farming and settlement; introduction of different species that could prove invasive; carbon emissions increasing the level of climate change and toxins altering ecosystems.
Researchers have affirmed that if many of the agricultural and commercial policies of the world are not changed then there are chances that human race could end as well. Researchers have warned that humans need to alter their behavior in order to save him and earth.
As per the researchers, if humans do not take actions to reverse the destruction that has happened then the next extinction could take place in 240 to 540 years. There are many experts who said that humans are not making enough efforts to curb carbon emission, the number one reason for global warming. They think the only way by which earth can be saved is to attain a 'carbon-neutral society'.
