Autos, taxis on a three-day strike in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Apr 22 : Autos and taxis drives plying across Maharashtra have gone on a three-day strike from Monday midnight to protest the introduction of electronic meters.

The state government has made electronic meters compulsory in all autos and taxis being registered at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) after March 1, 2008.

Though the proposal of having electronic meters had been under consideration for a year, the decision was taken in haste and that too without taking the auto drivers into confidence, president of the Mumbai Automen's Union, Sharad Rao told reporters on Monday.

Nearly 14 lakh taxi and auto drivers have decided to go off the roads. With majority of people opting for share-autos, the strike is expected to hit the city’s suburban areas the most. (ANI)
