Augmented reality technology could be great help for surgeons and firefighters

Scientists have come up with a way of projecting 3D holographic images into the field of view of an observer in an advancement that enable surgeons and firefighters to benefit from observing the world through technology in future.

This technology could be like the one used by comic-book superhero Iron Man. According to researchers, the holographic projections could be used to offer extra information on things in a person's visual field immediately in order to supplement their normal sense of vision by making use of augmented-reality headsets, similar to Iron Man's suit.

According to Simon Hall, the lead scientist in adaptive optics at the National Physical Laboratory, "This optical technology is a game-changer for the development of augmented-reality devices. The applications for devices that allow people to view the world around them overlaid with data relevant to what they are seeing are endless".

The research details will be released at this week's summer science exhibition at the Royal Society. The exhibition shows British scientific research and technical innovations.

As per reports, augmented-reality headsets depend on a British device like a microscopic slide that changes light from a computer or camera into a hologram. It can be shown facing a person's eye and focused within their field of vision.

Dr. Hall said that several things could be done with improved reality that can help people in different professions. A firefighter attempting to get an infra red view of a smoke-filled room could be benefited from it.
