Astronomers discover smallest known black hole
According to reports, the smallest black hole ever found has been discovered by astronomers in the center of a galaxy. As per CBS News, astronomers have found a teeny supermassive black hole. This discovery has been made by astronomers from the University of Michigan.
Supermassive black holes are approximately 100,000 times the mass of the Sun and it is thought that they exist at the center of every huge galaxy. As per scientists, "Stellar mass" black holes are smaller, which are formed as a result of collision of a single large star.
According to Vivienne Baldassare of the University of Michigan, "What we found was the smallest supermassive black hole. So it sits at the center of a very small galaxy and it weighs about 50,000 times the mass of our sun. and so it sort of bridges this gap between these two categories of black hole".
Reports say that the small supermassive black hole is located at galaxy RGG 118's centre. Galaxy RGG 118 is a dwarf disk galaxy, which lies at a distance of nearly 340 million light-years from Earth. The black hole has been found by the team with help of data that was collected by Chandra and the Clay Telescope.
As per reports, the importance of the small galactic black hole is that as a result of its size, it appears that the galaxy has not been in much interaction or amalgamation with other galaxies since its has creation. According to astronomers, black hole in galaxy RGG 118 could reveal more information in relation to the formation and behavior of such kind of space objects in the beginning days of the universe.
