Ants follow any leader to haul heavy loads

It has been revealed in a new study that ants have an amazing capability of carrying on work together using individual idea for heavy lifting. Scientists have showed adjustment made by a dozen or more ants working together to drag something big like an insect on the basis of new intelligence of a single ant in the effort.

It was observed by researchers that when the group is off target or is in trouble, the “scout” hinted a required change in direction by moving at a different angle.

According to Ofer Feinerman, the study’s main architect and a researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, “The individual ant has the idea of how to pass an obstacle but lacks the muscle power to move the load. The group is there to amplify the leader’s strength so that she can actually implement her idea”. It was surprising to note that the same ant that was leading also assigned that role to another new ant with latest information.

According to Feinerman, it can be said that the scout is not different from the other ants and no one selects the leader and no one designates herself for the reason that she is having current knowledge regarding the right direction.

Ants are one of the very few animals that are capable of managing things jointly in order to carry loads much heavier than an individual of their species. The study has been published in Nature Communications. It has also been found that there are an optimal number of ants to attain maximum speed while hauling.
