67P and other Comets could be Homes for Living Microorganisms

As per leading astronomers, Philae could be present on a comet that is full of life. The theory was also presented when Philae was being made, but it was not considered worthy enough. Therefore, Philae was fitted with life- detecting kit.

The comet, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, has organic-rich black crust, which is said so because of the presence of living organisms beneath an icy surface. In fact, the spacecraft orbiting the comet has also picked up some organic material that looks like viral particles.

Astronomer and astrobiologist Prof Chandra Wickramasinghe, involved in the mission 15 years back, think that people need to open about the presence of alien life. Prof. Chandra and Dr Max Wallis from the University of Cardiff, think that the 67P and other comets could be homes to living organisms similar to 'extremophiles' that are present in those parts of earth that is inhospitable.

They think that comets could have helped to have life on earth and on other planets as well. The researchers have conducted computer simulations. On the basis of their results, the scientists said that microbes can inhabit watery regions of the comet.

Organisms have anti-freeze salts and therefore, they will be active at temperatures. "These are not easily explained in terms of prebiotic chemistry. The dark material is being constantly replenished as it is boiled off by heat from the sun. Something must be doing that at a fairly prolific rate", said the researchers.
