YMCA and Houston Fire Department talk about Safe Swimming in Summer

Swimming is the best way to beat the heat in summers. In hot days, people usually prefer to head into the pool. But according to The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the Houston Fire Department, it is important to learn some safety tips before jumping into a pool.

Emmarie Clark, the Healthy Living senior director at the nonprofit organization YMCA, said in 2014, more than 70 people died in Texas from drowning while this year’s total has reached 14. The organization wants to ensure that every individual is safe around the water, Clark added.

According to Clark, swimming is a life skill that everyone should learn. It is the best way to stay cool in hot weather. Swimming could be started when kids are young, Clark said. The activity developed in children the skills that they need to be a successful swimmer, she added.

Clark said, “It's hard to escape water whether it's a pool or ocean. Places like the YMCA offer a variety of swimming lessons and she recommends starting early. The YMCA also goes out and offers lessons to kids who aren't able to come to their locations.”

While talking about the safety during swimming, Kenyatta Parker of the Houston Fire Department said it is parents’ responsibility to keep an eye on their kids’ activities. They have to check what their children are doing in summers, Parker added. This time of the year is critical for kids to be watched closely, he said.

According to Parker, parents will have to ensure that they are going to supervise their kids when the kids are near a pool. If a child does not know how to swim, parents should teach them. It is important for both adults and kids to know about swimming, Parker added.
