XL Foods to recall 800 laid-off workers
XL Foods, a meat processing company based in Brooks in Alberta, has announced that it is recalling 800 workers that were laid off only a day earlier.
The company said that it is recalling the workers to help Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to complete its investigation of the company’s operations that are linked to a breakout of an E. coli outbreak. The CFIA investigation came to a halt over the weekend after the company temporarily laid off 2,000 workers.
The investigators from CFIA said that they had nothing to inspect as the workers were not present to carry out operation activities. The company had decided to lay off the workers because the government did not announced a date to return company’s license in order to allow I to return to full operations.
XL Foods announced on Sunday afternoon that it is recalling a total of 800 workers to help the federal investigators complete their review of the company’s operations. The investigation into how the company process 5,100 beef carcasses, is half complete. If the investigation reveals acceptable standards at the company’s operations, the government will provide its license bank to the company.
“We look forward to actively working with CFIA to bring this to a viable and timely resolution to allow the plant to recommence operations,” Brian Nilsson, co-CEO of XL Foods.
