World Stock Market Review By Nirmal Bang

Sensex BSEMarket Round Up-  The BSE Sensex fell 225.6 points to settle at 14,809.64, after hitting a low of 14,684.45. The Nifty shed 64.8 points, to close at 4394.10, after seeing a day's low of 4353.45. The broader indices continued to remain under pressure but did not fall in line with benchmark indices; the BSE Midcap lost 1.1% and the Smallcap Index down 0.5%. Total traded turnover stood at Rs 1,04,160.07 crore as against Rs 94,599.56 crore on Tuesday. The market breadth was weak; about 1,203 shares advanced while 1,568 shares declined on the BSE. Nearly 409 shares remained unchanged. All sectoral indices ended in the red. The BSE Oil & Gas, Metal, Auto and Power index fell 2?2.7%.

Movers & Shakers

In the oil & gas space, Reliance Industries lost 3.2%. GAIL, ONGC, Cairn India, HPCL and IOC fell 1?2.3%. Metal stocks like Tata Steel, Sesa Goa, Hindalco, JSW Steel, Jindal Saw and SAIL were down 2?4%. Sterlite Industries and Jindal Steel fell over 1%.

In the auto pack, Bharat Forge tumbled 5.59%. Ashok Leyland, M&M, Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda, Tata Motors and Amtek Auto declined 2?3.6%. Maruti Suzuki was flat.

Power stocks like Reliance Infrastructure plunged nearly 5%. Suzlon Energy, GMR Infra, Power Grid Corp, NTPC, GVK Power and Tata Power lost 1?4%.

In the banking space, SBI lost 2.5%. Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, PNB and ICICI Bank declined 0.4?1.4%. Capital goods stocks like Siemens, Punj Lloyd and BHEL slipped
1.3?2.8% while L&T was up just 0.4%.

In the FMCG space, Dabur India, United Spirits and Marico declined 1?2.8%. Colgate, HUL, Tata Tea and ITC were down 0.4?0.8%.
