According to UN, world population growth will continue in this century and in 2050, population of the world will increase from 7.3 billion people to 9.7 billion and it will reach 11.2 billion at the end of the century.

Asia has chances of remaining most heavily populated continent and its population is expected to reach nearly 5.3 billion at the middle of the century and then to fall to approximately 4.9 billion people by the century’s end. Presently, the population of the continent is 4.4 billion.

As per reports, developing countries like India, that have young populations but lower fertility, could see considerable population ageing prior to the end of the century.

According to John R. Wilmoth, director of the United Nations' (UN) Population Division, “India, along with China and Brazil, need to invest some of the benefits of their demographic dividend in the coming decades toward provisions for the older population of the future such as social security, pensions and health care”.

He said the chance that growth in world’s population will end in this century is 23%. He was speaking in a session concentrated on demographic forecasting at the "2015 Joint Statistical Meetings" in Seattle.

The population will keep on rising in this century unless significant fertility declines occur in those regions of sub-Saharan Africa, where population is still growing rapidly. As per models of demographic change, it is expected that in 2100, the global population will reach between 9.5 and 13.3 billion people.
