Weight Loss Surgery Can Show Remarkable Improvement in Health of People with Type 2 Diabetes
Researchers through a recent study suggested that instead of going for traditional lifestyle changes if a person battling with Type 2 diabetes goes for weight loss surgery then he/she could see remarkable improvements in their diabetes.
The study suggests that the improvements of the weight loss surgery are seen within three years. They also said that this method could be seen as a more effective option for some people who cannot manage to control diabetes through lifestyle-only changes.
Study's lead author Dr. Anita Courcoulas of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said in a statement that the most important thing to remember here is the durability of remission over time.
The weight loss surgery is typically performed on people who have a body mass index of 40 or more, or someone who has other health conditions on top of a body mass index below 40.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, which is also linked to obesity. Researchers in the study examined 61 people who were between ages 25 to 55, and all had Type 2 diabetes.
The participants were randomly assigned one of three different treatments which were intensive lifestyle-only intervention for one year, then a lower-intensity lifestyle intervention with counseling for 2 years.
The participants were also assigned to go for one out of two different weight loss surgeries, which were Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.
After three years, 40 % of the people in the Roux-en-Y group went into remission with the diabetes, while 29 % in the gastric banding saw remission and 0 % of participants in the lifestyle-only group saw a remission.
