We might be living in 2D space: Study
According to study by mathematical researchers of Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), universe is just a hologram and we might just be living in a 2D space, rather than 3D.
Although this statement seems ridiculous, holograms, too, appear as if they are three dimensional even though they only exist in two dimensions.
So, it might be possible that our universe just a hologram and the 3-D world witnessed by us could just be an illusion.
Scientists have devised a model which demonstrated that our entire universe could be described using one fewer dimension. According to them what we perceive as three dimensional may just be the image of two dimensional processes on a huge cosmic horizon.
Describing universe in two dimensions mathematically has been studied extensively previously as well. A 'holographic principle' has also been shown to work under a variety of theoretical conditions.
However, it just wasn't shown to apply under conditions that resembles specifically with our universe.
The Vienna team did this by showing how certain quantum effects could exist in a flat space. The reason our universe is considered 'flat' as it expands out infinitely and spacetime does not curve back in on itself.
They showed how theories of quantum effects calculated in 2D may be 'mapped' onto 3D gravitational models.
Researchers Arjun Bagchi, Rudranil Basu, Daniel Grumiller, and Max Riegler wrote, "We present the analytical calculation of entanglement entropy for a class of two-dimensional field theories governed by the symmetries of the Galilean conformal algebra, thus providing a rare example of such an exact computation".
This discovery has opened minds to the possibility that we're living in a holographic universe.
