VolkswagenEurope's largest car maker, Volkswagen has set a target to sell one lakh cars by 2014 supported by mass-market model 'Polo' which is expected to hit roads next year in India both in hatchback and sedan models. The company has already set up a car manufacturing utility at Chakan in Maharashtra, having capacity to produce 1.1 lakh units per year.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Member of Board and Director Neeraj Garg said, "We will be launching the hatchback model of Polo some time during the first half of next year and bring the sedan model in the fall of 2010."

VW hopes 10 times increase in car sale growth, selling 25,000 to 30,000 units next year backed by its twin Polo variant. The company is fully optimistic to do well with Polo in the Indian market and hopes that it would be very competitive, challenging the dominance of rival players.

Mr. Garg further added, "Our goal in India is very clear -- we need to be a high volume player. We will not benchmark pricing with group companies (Skoda Fabia) but with segment leaders. Our prime benchmark for the Polo would be Suzuki Swift."

Skoda's maiden hatchback model, Fabia failed to attract Indian give to consumer perception of considerably high price.
