Valley tense, separatists under house arrest
Hours before the Hurriyat’s planned march to Lal Chowk in the city, the separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq were taken into preventive custody. The incident led to some real ugly tension as the news flew across the air of Srinagar.
According to the official sources, the leaders were picked up from their homes by the police, accompanied by para-military forces.
The section 107 of Ranbir Penal Code has been applied to the leaders’ custody, under which any person who tries to ignite the crowd that may lead to law and order problem can be arrested.
Other than this, in order to maintain peace and safety at the national highways heading to Kupwara and Leh have been put under the scrutiny of Army, as separatists leaders including, Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan and Masarat Alam, were most likely thought to lead the processions towards Lal Chowk.
However, the police is in search of the all the ones named above, as they have been able to escape Jammu.
Earlier on Sunday, Valley was violent for people from both sides of Amarnath protested against the curfew.
The protests in Srinagar led to death of one person and injury for others, as the security forces opted to open fire on the protestors who were gathered at Dal Gate area.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti reported, “Congress is with the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti in Jammu. They are also brandishing trishul and talwar and going around harassing Muslims. Even the National Conference is doing that. We have told our party that anyone who wants to go has to resign from the party. If they want to toe the SASB line, they have to resign first.”
Monday saw Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti jamming the complete chakka and the party has decided to extend their bandh till 31st August.
