Unique-Structured Teeth helped Theropods rule Prehistoric World
A Scientific Reports-published study has stated that saw-like internal tooth structure in carnivorous dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus Rex may have helped them greatly. The teeth may have played an important role in their success as predator.
During the assessment, the researchers came to know that teeth of meat-eating dinosaurs had specially layered arrangements of dentine. This hardened tissue served two purposes. Firstly, it helped to strengthen the tooth and secondly, it enlarged the tooth's jagged edges.
This type of structure led the meat-eating Theropod dinosaurs to have the crush bones and predate on other large animals. The researchers from the University of Toronto Mississauga affirmed that when the teeth of these dinosaurs used to erode or lost then they used to grow new teeth. It could take two years for dinosaur to grow new teeth.
The research findings led the researchers know why the theropods had ruled prehistoric world for around 165 million years. For the study, the researchers have assed eight theropod species and after studying them, the research came to know about the dinosaurs' unique dental structure.
Slices from fossil teeth were assessed with the help of a powerful microscope and a device that helped knowing about tooth chemical properties.
"In theropods, the serrations are larger and deeper than the superficial view suggests, making them stronger and longer lasting, less likely to get damaged or worn", affirmed Prof. Robert Reisz from University of Toronto Mississauga.
