UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon unveils Aakash 2 tabletUN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon yesterday unveiled the much-awaited low-cost tablet Aakash 2 at a special event in New York.

Priced at modest Rs 2200, the Aakash 2 is successor to Aakash-1 device that was flaunted to be India's iPad killer.

Ki-Moon appreciated the second-generation Aakash tablet computer for its small and handy body. He also praised India saying the country is a super-power in the field of information technology (IT).

Unveiling India's first indigenously manufactured low-cost tablet, Ki-Moon said, "Indeed, India is a super-power on the information superhighway. There is a reason places like Hyderabad are called 'Cyberabad'."

He said that `Aakash' means `sky' in Hindi, and added that countries should work with the UN to help youth in reaching the sky and meet their dreams.

Despite low price, the Aakash 2 comes with impressive specifications, such as Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating software, ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor, 512MB of DDR3 RAM, 4GB of internal storage, 32GB microSD support, 7-inch, four-point capacitive multi-touch screen with pixel dimensions of 800 by 480, 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 3.5 mm audio jack, G-sensor, Mini-USB port with OTG, and 3200 mA Li-ion battery with up to 3 hours of backup.

Hardeep Singh Puri, India's permanent representative to the UN, stressed that the initiative was aiming at transforming classrooms and eradicating illiteracy by providing all 220 million students in the country over the next five years with inexpensive computers and internet.
