Truck-train crash kills father and two daughters

Truck-train crash kills father and two daughtersPolice has said that a passenger train slammed into a truck in Edmonton, Alberta, during a snowstorm Tuesday, killing a man and his young daughters.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has reported the girls were sisters in the second and fourth grades though the names of the victims were not released. No injuries were reported aboard the Via Rail train, which sustained minor damage.

It was reported that the crash occurred about 8:40 a. m. at a level crossing. Witness Karyn Hick told the CBC she was stopped at the crossing when she saw a vehicle coming from the opposite direction stop and get hit by the train.

"There was a loud bang, like a door being slammed," she said, adding she saw the truck "flying through the air and then when the train left, there was no vehicle there. I thought it was in my imagination."

According to the report, the truck landed in a nearby ditch.

The crossing's warning lights and gate were working on her side when she approached, Hick told the broadcaster. Authorities were investigating whether the signals on the opposite side were functional.

Investigators suggested poor visibility and slushy road conditions also were a factor, the CBC has reported. (With Inputs from Agencies)
