TRAI seeking views on fresh draft of MNP regulations
India's telecom sector regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has sought views on the new draft amendment to the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) regulations that allow users to move to another telecom network while retaining the same number.
The TRAI had issued Telecommunications Mobile Number Portability (Fourth Amendment) regulations, 2012 and had included provisions allowing the authorities to impose penalties on telecom service providers for unjustified rejection of porting requests. Telecom users in the country have been troubled with the telecom operators not agreeing with several portable request without a valid reason.
"The Authority had received complaints from the subscribers of corporate mobile numbers that their porting requests have been rejected by the donor operators under the category "Contractual Obligation" for want of permission/authorization from the company/ corporate for porting such numbers", TRAI said in a statement.
The government had recently observed that telecom service providers have not agreed to portability requests on several cases against the provisions of the laws. TRAI has also released a directive to the companies to comply with the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) regulations. Data showed that about 84.26 million subscribers have given requests to telecom service providers for moving to a new network.
