Tilera Announces 100-Core Chip CPUs

Tilera Announces 100-Core Chip CPUsTwo year old Technology company Tilera, based at San Jose, California, has introduced to the market its new range of general purpose CPUs on Monday. Trying to make its mark in the American server market which is currently dominated by the likes of Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, Tilera has put forward CPUs which include a 100-core chip and are targeted particularly at servers which execute web-related functions like indexing and web and video searches.

In a market where big names such as Intel rule and are continually updating their offerings, Tilera is slowly trying to ease in by targeting a small group first. "The reason we have target markets is not because of any technological limitations or other stuff in the chip. It is simply because, you know, you have to market your processor (to a) target audience. As a small company we can't boil the ocean", said Tilera co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Anant Agarwal.

Tilera's latest offering are being marketed as the Tile-GX series and while the 100-core chip variant of the product will draw close to 55 watts of power during its maximum performance, the 16-core chip is designed to draw as low as 5 watts even at its best.

While the company's efforts are being appreciated and experts are clearly interested in the developments, Will Strauss, principal analyst at Forward Concepts, is a little skeptical about the whole deal. "I don't think an average person is going to run out to buy a computer with Tilera in it," Strauss said. And while he is not alone, and many believe that it will take Tilera years to catch with Intel and the likes, this is definitely a start.
