Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Issues New Directives For Mobile Service Providers

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Issues New Directives For Mobile Service ProvidersAccording to reports, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has issued new directives for mobile service providers in terms of the 'unsolicited activation of Value Added Services'.

Also, these directives, allows a mobile service provider to charge customer for VAS, only if it has received confirmation from the customer to activate the services.

Hence, TRAI has stated that: "The mobile company will have to inform the consumer about the renewal date of an active VAS at least three days before the validity of the service is about to end".

However, TRAI at the moment needs mobile companies to obtain confirmation via SMS, e-mail, fax or in writing, within 24 hours of activation of the VAS, and if there is no confirmation message, the subscriber does not have to pay for the service and can discontinue VAS , in case no confirmation message is received.

In addition, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, endeavors to protect the interest of telecom consumers, hence, it has released two draft regulations on 'Telecom Consumers Protection Regulation, 2011' and 'The Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal Regulations, 2011'.

Moreover, two draft regulations prescribe measures for 'protecting the interest of telecom consumers and improvised framework for the redressal of complaints of Telecom consumers'. TRAI has demanded suggestions and comments from all stakeholders from the 25th of July, 2011.
