Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary PolakB. C. new legislation prohibits smoking in the presence of children under 16. The new law will come into effect on World Health Day, April 7. The new law will allow police to stop any vehicle on suspicion of smoking in the presence of children and charge $109 fine if found guilty. Anyone refusing to pay fine will not be issued both a driver's licence and insurance. Parents are applauding this effort of government to protect children from danger of second hand smoke.

Cancer rates as well as survival rates are increasing  Recent study revealed that 695,000 living Canadians were diagnosed with an invasive cancer over a 10-year period ending at the beginning of January 2005. The study concluded that although cancer rates are increasing but it is also a fact that survival rates are improving.

Study by Statistics Canada reveled that the most prevalent cancer in women was breast cancer and prostate cancer in men followed by colorectal cancer. 40% cancer cases are due to breast cancer and 38.2% men were diagnosed prostate cancer.

India, latest haunt for pharmaceutical firms worldwide

CM GulhatiMultinational pharmaceutical firms including Roche, Pfizer and Astra Zeneca are waiting for the official approval to conduct clinical trails in India. DCGI received 100 applications for conducting such trials in 2005 this grew to 350 in 2008. Experts estimate that during the next three years, the clinical research industry in India will be worth about two billion dollars. Different experts have different opinion about this boom in clinical research industry.

Some attribute this to financial profits due to low cost while other believes this is due to growing interest of pharma majors in emerging markets like India.

‘RTI on Wheels’ completes one year of successful functioning

RTI`RTI on Wheels', a state-of-the-art mobile van has completed one year of its successful functioning. It was launched last year by the Gujarat State Information Commission, Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration (SPIPA) and Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel (MAGP).

`RTI on Wheels' was specifically designed to spread awareness about the Right to Information (RTI) in far-flung areas. The van has various facilities like audio visual aids and internet for organizing video shows and discussions. It also helped people to draft applications, appeals and complaints.

RTI on wheels' has spread among 80,000 people in 450 villages and 13 cities in last one year.

Apollo Hospitals has launched a programme to spread awareness about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Senior consultant vascular surgeon Dr V Balaji said: "DVT occurs usually in legs without any visible symptoms and is difficult to detect and is not always recognised as having been the cause of death."

The security researcher known for hacking a Mac in just 2 minutes at CanSecWest's PWN2OWN contest last year - Charlie Miller improved his record by hacking a Mac in just under 10 seconds, at this year's CanSecWest security conference, on Wednesday.

Charlie Miller won $10,000 hacking a MacBook Air last year, but he won a $5,000 cash prize, along with the MacBook he hacked this year. Miller is presently principal security analyst at Independent Security Evaluators.
