Canadian Immigration Minister meets Pranab Mukherjee

Pranab MukherjeeNew Delhi, Jan 13 : Jason Kenney, Canadian Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee here today.

Kenney arrived in India on the last leg of his 12-day long tour to Asia after concluding his two-day tour of Pakistan.

Kenny is expected to visit Amritsar, Chandigarh and Mumbai where he is scheduled to meet business and education leaders to communicate Canada''s immigration policy innovations to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Nath further said that the global financial and economic crisis makes it even more compelling to conclude Doha Round. This, he said, would help in tackling problems like poverty and unemployment through expansive trade opportunities.

Transporters call off eight-day strike

Transporters call off eight-day strikeNew Delhi, Jan. 12 : The eight-day-old strike by transporters has been called off following a second round of discussions held between the government and representatives of the All India Motors Transport Congress (AIMTC).

Secretary, Road Transport and Highways Brahm Dutt told reporters here this evening that the strike has been called off.

The details of the agreement reached between the government and the AIMTC managing committee members, however, were not fully divulged.

Mayawati given a month to reply to CBI claim in disproportionate assets case

New Delhi, Jan. 12 : The Supreme Court on Monday gave Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati a month''s time to respond to the Central Bureau of Investigation claim in a disproportionate assets case against her.

The CBI has claimed that there is ample evidence to prosecute her in a disproportionate assets case registered against her five years ago.

Mayawati, through a plea before the court, has asked to quash any criminal proceedings against her in the stated case stating that was registered against her due to political vendetta.

India adopts integrated energy policy to sustain its economic growth

Addressing the issue of India''s energy deficit, Deora said the integrated energy policy envisages an energy mix that focuses on augmenting the domestic energy resource base and increasing efficiency while strategizing India''s stakes in energy assets overseas.
