US confirms it’s diverting two-thirds of anti-terror Pak aid to upgrading F-16sWashington, July 25 : Washington has reportedly confirmed that it was willing to divert two-third of anti-terror funds to Pakistan to financing up-gradation of F-16 fighter jets.

“The F-16s ... are used in counter-terrorism operations. We made them available to [Pakistan] and they need to be maintained,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said while addressing reporters.

JI warns US against attack on Pak

Lahore, July 25 : Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain AhmadJamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad has reportedly warned the US against attacking Pakistan, and added that if Washington committed this “foolish mistake”, every Pakistani would give a befitting reply.

He said that the JI would mobilise Pakistanis against the American designs, and would welcome all the forces joining that cause. “Leaderships of Iran and China would also be consulted in this regard,” the Daily Times quoted him as saying.

Asian HR body demands UN probe into detention of Pakistani woman at US base

Lahore, July 25 : The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has reportedly urged the United Nations to investigate the alleged detention of a Pakistani national Dr Afia Sadeeqi at a US military base in Afghanistan for the past five years.

The human rights body said that it feared that Sadeeqi, who went missing along with her children five years ago from Karachi, was being detained at a US prison in Bagram.

Accused of being a member of Al Qaeda and masterminding terrorist attacks in the US, Dr Sadeeqi is wanted by several US investigation agencies. Both Pakistani and US intelligence agencies had confirmed her arrest soon after her disappearance, but since then, the government has been denying any knowledge of her whereabouts, reported the Daily Times.

Musharraf offers support to govt to overcome terrorism, economic slide

Pervez MusharrafIslamabad, July 24 : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today said that he would support the government in its efforts to overcome the twin problems of terrorism and the economic downturn.

Musharraf said this during a meeting with Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan and Chaudhry brothers at the Presidential Camp Office here.

He also said that a clash between institutions would seriously damage the country at this time.

The President said he has an important role to play in the present set up and that he will continue to do his best in this regard.

Scribe-turned-Taleban ultra assumes ‘complete control’ over Mohmand Agency

Peshawar, July 24: Umar Khalid, a poet-and-journalist-turned-Taleban, has assumed the complete control over the Mohmand Agency after eliminating the chief and deputy chief of the Shah Sahib militant group in a bloody battle last Friday. Now he is considered as most powerful TTP (Tehrik-e-Taleban Pakistan) leader, only next to Baitullah Mehsud and Maulvi Faqir.

Umar Khalid, currently in his early 40s, was the Harkatul Mujahideen chief in the Mohmand Agency before becoming a Taliban commander. In his younger days he worked for two different publications.

“He (Umar Khalid) is the strongest and most influential Taliban leader after Baitullah Mehsud and Maulvi Faqir,” the Daily Times quoted the residents of Mohmand Agency as saying.

During a meeting lasting seven hours between the heads of the ruling parties at Prime Minister’s House, the coalition partners said that no one would be allowed to use Pakistan’s territory to stage terrorist attacks on foreign countries, and challenge the writ of state.
