Pakistani President Zardari among 2008’s top 10 foreign figuresIslamabad, December 31: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has been named among year 2008's `Top Ten Prominent Foreign Figures' by a Chinese newspaper.

The paper called Guangming Daily has even profiled Zardari, and published details of his education and political career.

"Consensus says that Zardari's time commenced while Musharraf's time concluded," the Daily Times quoted the Chinese-language paper as noting.

Pak tells China it is entitled to defend the nation

Pakistan FlagIslamabad, Dec. 30 : The Pakistan government has told a visiting Chinese delegation that it has the right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in case of aggression from the enemy.

The Chinese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, He Yafie, held meetings with Pakistani President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, besides other government officials in Islamabad on Monday.

President Zardari told Yafie that Pakistan had taken positive steps after the Mumbai attacks, but India failed in providing ''support'' and instead made false allegations against it.

Pak-India standoff: Saarc business leaders conference put off

Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Executive Member, Zubair Ahmad Malik told Geo News here that the two-day Saarc business leaders conference slated February 21 here has been put off, as the Indian delegation's visit to Pakistan didn't seem possible due to the highly charged posture between the two countries.

Nawaz calls for commission to probe Bugti’s murder

Nawaz Sharif Lahore, Dec. 30 : Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif has asked the government to set up a commission to investigate Baloch nationalist leader, Nawab Akbar Bugti's murder case.

Nawaz has demanded Bugti's killing be investigated after his meeting with Jamhoori Watan Party chief, Talal Akbar Bugti, the Daily Times reported.

The PML-N chief also said that the former president Pervez Musharraf had committed injustices against the people of Balochistan.

Pak shuts NATO supplies as operation to flush out militants begins in Khyber-pass

PakistanPeshawar, Dec. 30 : Supplies to the NATO and the US forces in Afghanistan via the Khyber-pass have been suspended due to a major operation launched by the security forces in the region.

"Supplies to NATO forces have temporarily been suspended," The News quoted an official, as saying.

The military operation being jointly carried out by the forces, aims to flush out militants from the region.

Shoaib Malik set to get year’s extension as Pak skipper

Shoaib MalikKarachi, Dec. 30 : As Pakistan looks forward to wear white clothes on a cricket field after a year against Sri Lanka, Captain Shoaib Malik is set to get an extension of his job.

"There are strong indications that Malik's stint as captain would be extended for one more year," The News quoted a PCB official, as saying.

Former Pakistan captain and wicket keeper, Moin Khan has also backed Malik for the post, saying that Pakistan cannot afford to have anybody else at the helm of their team at this point of time.
