New York, Aug 25: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States recruited a family of Swiss engineers to thwart an underground supply network of disgraced Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan as well as thwart the Libyan and Iranian nuclear programmes.

The New York Times reported that the Swiss engineers, Friedrich Tinner and his two sons, were accused of having deep associations with Dr. Khan, acting as middlemen in his dealings with rogue nations seeking nuclear equipment and expertise.

Washington, Aug 25: During his nine-year long rule, former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf dealt lightly with terrorists, leaving them able to make trouble both for Afghanistan, on one side of his nation, and India on the other, said an editorial in the Houston Chronicle.

It said that now it was up to Nawaz Shraif and Asif Ali Zardari to adopt a crack-down policy against Al Qaeda militants.

Lahore, Aug 25: Contrary to the US and its allies’ belief that the international terror group Al Qaeda was being run on a network of wealthy financiers to fund their terror activities, it has been noted that Qaeda’s strategy had increasingly turned to local cells that run extremely low-cost operations and generate funds through criminal scams.

The aim of the strategy was to bypass the global financial dragnet set up by the US and Europe to hunt for wealthy financiers and freeze their bank accounts, said a report in The Washington Post.

Mingora (Pakistan), Aug 25: Ten people were killed today in Pakistan's Swat Valley when militants attacked a district government official home.

According to the police, the deceased include three members of a family and seven security guards.

The fighting between troops and militants in the Swat Valley has intensified in recent weeks. On Sunday, 78 people were killed and several others injured as fierce clashes continued in different parts of the Swat Valley.

Islamabad, Aug 25: PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who is all set to become the next President of Pakistan, has said that the Pakistan unit of the Taliban – the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) – should be put on the list of banned organisations in Pakistan as it was presently having an “upper hand” is so far as the Pakistan Government’s war against terror was concerned.

He said both the world and Pakistan were losing the war on terror.

Islamabad - At least 10 people were killed on Saturday as pro-Taliban militants attacked the residence of a member of parliament in North-Western Frontier Province (NWFP), officials said.

Dozens of heavily-armed militants targeted the house of Waqar Ahmad Khan with several rockets in Kabal area of the restive Swat valley.

Waqar was not in the house when the attack took place but his brother Iqbal Khan died as did his two nephews. Seven bodyguards were also killed in the raid, police said.
