British envoy praises Pakistan's emerging role in South Asia

Pakistan MapIslamabad - Britain's foreign secretary said on Wednesday Pakistan is emerging as "cooperative force" in South Asia through its efforts to improve relations with neighbours.

"The foreign policy dialogue that is being pursued with Afghanistan, with India" is turning Pakistan outwards and making clear that the country is emerging as a cooperative force for stability in the region," David Miliband said after meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mamhood Qureshi.

Pak cricketers step up efforts for own association

Pakistan flagLahore, Nov 26 : On the lines of cricket associations in Australia, England and South Africa, Pakistan cricketers have stepped up their efforts to establish a professional association to look after their rights and other welfare activities.

In this regard, Pakistan vice-captain Misbahul Haq had submitted a proposal with the constitution committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Sports Ministry last week, calling for cricketers to have an association.

Pak to buy three submarines from Germany

Pakistan FlagKarachi, Nov 26 : Departing from its earlier practice of buying submarines from France, Pakistan has reportedly decided to acquire three German submarines of “Type 214”.

Walter Freitag, the chief executive officer of the HDW, the largest conventional submarine maker in the world, said that his company had finalised technical specifications with the navy to build three “Type 214” submarines in Pakistan.

“The commercial contract has been finalised up to 95 per cent,” The News quoted him as saying.

He hoped the final contract in this regard will be signed soon.

PCB briefs Indian High Commissioner about “plans” for Indo-Pak series

Pakistan Cricket BoardIslamabad, Nov 26 : PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt met with Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad Satya Pal last evening, and later told media persons that he hoped that the Indian tour (to Pakistan) will take place as per the schedule.

Ijaz said he briefed the Indian High Commissioner about PCB’s plans for the forthcoming Indo-Pak series. “I am hopeful that India will tour and we are preparing for it,” the Daily Times quoted him as saying.

Ijaz, however, refused to disclose any details of his meeting with the Indian High Commissioner.

“Local gangs assisting Pak Taiban in NWFP”

Lahore, PakistanPeshawar, Nov 26 : NWFP police chief has reportedly said that a group of Afghan and local criminal gangs were helping the Pakistan’s unit of the Taliban, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), using Peshawar as a ‘resource generation point’ for the terror organization.

“The Taliban are using Khyber Agency as base and Peshawar as the resource generation point,” the Daily Times quoted NWFP Inspector General of Police Malik Naveed Khan as saying.
