India, Pakistan Home Secretaries resolve to combat terrorism in all forms

Islamabad, Nov. 27: India and Pakistan have reiterated their resolve to combat the menace of terrorism in all forms and manifestation.

A joint statement issued by both countries after the conclusion of the two-day fifth round of Interior/Home Secretary talks held here on November 25 and 26, said: "Both sides condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and affirmed their resolve to cooperate with each other to combat the menace of terrorism. It was agreed that terrorism must be prevented and as directed by the leadership of the two countries at the meeting in New York on 24th September 2008, severe action be taken against any elements involved in terrorist acts.

akistan President Asif Ali ZardariPeshawar, Nov 27: The Pakistan unit of the Taliban, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is planning to target Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and his allies for their ‘pro-American’ stance, said a regional commander of the terror outfit.

Hakeemullah Mehsud, deputy of TTP leader Baitullah Mehsud, accused the ANP (Awami National Party), PPP (Pakistan Peoples’ Party) and MQM (Muttahida Qaumi Movement) of “working to break up Pakistan in collaboration with the US”, reported the Daily Times.

Miliband asks Pak to directly engage with US to resolve drone strikes issueIslamabad, Nov 27: British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who is currently on a visit to Pakistan, has reportedly urged Islamabad and Washington to resolve the problem of the drone attacks, and asked Pakistan to engage directly with the US to stop these raids.

“Pakistan should engage with the US government to get the drone attacks stopped,” the Daily Times quoted Miliband as saying while speaking at the International Islamic University.

Pak PM condemns Mumbai attacksIslamabad, Nov 27 : Pakistan has reportedly condemned last night’s multiple terror strikes in Mumbai, in which at least 80 people have been dead so far.

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the gun and grenade attacks. In a message he said: “We condemn these attacks,” reported the Daily Times

While the US State Department called the attacks ‘horrific’, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the incident was ‘outrageous’ and expressed solidarity with India.

Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto wins UN human rights award posthumously

New York  - The UN General Assembly on Wednesday announced it would give its 2008 human rights awards posthumously to Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Dorothy Stang, a French Catholic nun.

Other winners are Louise Arbour of Canada, the former UN high commissioner for human rights; US lawyer Ramsey Clark; Carolyn Gomes of the Jamaicans For Justice group; and Denis Mukwege of Congo and the New York-based Human Rights Watch.

The UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights for 2008 was announced by assembly president, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann. It is awarded every five years.

Pakistan to buy German submarines

Islamabad Supreme CourtIslamabad  - Pakistan has formally decided to buy three Type 214 German submarines under a more than 1 billion dollar deal that the two countries are expected to sign in coming months, a media report said on Wednesday.

German shipbuilding company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) will construct the diesel-electric submarines in a shipyard in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, Pakistan's English-language daily The News reported.
