Rift opens up between Pak Army, government in wake of Mumbai attacks

Islamabad, Dec. 2: A rift has opened up between the Pakistani Government and the army in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.

"The Mumbai attacks seem to have exacerbated civil-military tensions within Pakistan," the Telegraph quoted a STRATFOR analyst, as saying.

Both the Dawn and the Telegraph have reported that "clear differences in perception" have surfaced between army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, President Asif Ali Zardar Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani.

The most visible evidence of the gulf occurred when Zardari promised India the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence directorate would visit India to help with the investigation into the attack.

Comparing Mumbai attack to Karachi riots, an exercise in futility: Pak editorial

Karachi, Dec. 2 : An editorial in the Daily Times has said that the ethnic trouble in Karachi and the recent terror strikes in Mumbai are as different as chalk and cheese, and therefore making comparisons would be an exercise in futility.

It further says that ethnic rioting in Karachi has been on for long, and has surfaced well before what happened in Mumbai last week.

It, therefore, cautions against whipping up hatred against India, saying that it is not as important as suppressing the ethnic rage in Karachi.

Ethnic rioting in Karachi has so far resulted in the death of 29 people and injuries to 200, prompting Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to call for a report on what is happening.

Pak faces pressure from US, West to curb ISI

London, Dec 2 : Pakistan is facing huge pressure from the US and the West to curb its intelligence service ISI, the organisation that has sponsored an array of Islamist terrorists, following the Mumbai massacre.

The ISI has been blamed of having links with the group blamed for carrying out the Mumbai attacks including Lashkar-e-Toiba, the group being blamed for the attacks which led to deaths of 195 people, The Independent reports.

However, Pakistan’s recently elected civilian government has very limited room for manoeuvre. Many of those who are ministers now have had to deal with the ISI in the past to safeguard their careers, and the intelligence service knows where the bodies are buried in the violent and murky political history of the country.
