Rice says Pakistan ‘must take action’

Washington, Dec. 8 : US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said that Pakistan must take action against militants on its territory who may be linked to the Mumbai attacks, and added the argument that the Mumbai attackers were non-state actors is unacceptable.

She told ABC, “I did say to the Pakistanis that the argument that these are non-state actors is not acceptable. Non-state actors in your territory are still your responsibility.”

She said, “This is a time when Pakistan must act. They must act in concert with India, with the United States. Great Britain is helping.”

She added that Pakistan has expressed “a good, strong commitment” to take action, “but now we have to see follow-through.”

Mumbai attack: Rice denies India setting Pakistan a 48-hour deadline to deliver

Washington, Dec. 8 : US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday denied that India had given Pakistan a 48-hour deadline to take action against those behind last month’s terror attacks in Mumbai that claimed close to 200 lives and caused injuries to about 300.

Interviewed on Fox television, Rice said there was evidence of involvement of Pakistani elements in the attacks and added that they were non-state actors.

She echoed remarks from Pakistan’s Foreign Office denying Islamabad had agreed to a 48-hour timetable to take action against Pakistanis accused of involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

“No. There’s not a timetable involved here,” the US top diplomat said.

Pakistan, India suspend talks indefinitelyIslamabad/New Delhi, Dec. 8 : Pakistan and India have reportedly agreed to suspend their composite dialogue in the wake of the November 26 Mumbai attacks.

Diplomatic sources told the Daily Times on Sunday that “India believes that Pakistan-based elements are involved in the Mumbai attacks and is in no mood to talk to Pakistan until its concerns are adequately and timely addressed.”

Pak to respond to India’s second demarche in a couple of days

Islamabad, Dec. 8 : The Pakistan Government has said that it will respond to the Indian Government’s second demarche on what actions the former proposes to take vis-à-vis the Mumbai terror strikes in a few days.

India is expecting the response on Monday, but authorities in Islamabad have indicated that it could take some more days before a response is forwarded.

Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal met on Saturday, and at that time, there was an indication that a response would be forthcoming on Monday.

Militants attack NATO trucks in Pakistan, kill guard

Islamabad  = Rebels in north-western Pakistan attacked a parking bay used by US and NATO contractors in Afghanistan, killing a guard and torching dozens of trucks, police said Sunday.

The attack took place in the early hours at Al-Faisal terminal on the outskirts of Peshawar city, where trucks carrying food and military supplies for Western troops are parked at night.

"A group of insurgents raided the terminal at around 3 am (2200 GMT) and fired rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles at the trucks and container, setting more than
60 of them on fire," police officer Fazal Mohammad Khan said.

Some of the trucks were carrying armoured vehicles for the NATO forces.
