Ex-Brit envoy in Pak fails to persuade Nawaz to give Musharraf a “safe exit”Lahore, Aug 15 : A former British high commissioner in Pakistan reportedly tried to persuade former Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif to grant a safe exit to President Pervez Musharraf, here last evening. But, the latter is learnt to have turned down the request, telling the ex-envoy that Musharraf should either resign or face impeachment.

Nawaz told him that three of the four provincial assemblies in the country had already passed resolutions demanding Musharraf to seek vote-of-confidence or face impeachment.

After Bajaur, tribesmen start fleeing restive Mohmand Agency too

Ghalanai (Pak), Aug 15 : After a mass exodus from the strife-torn Bajaur Agency, tribesmen from the nearby Mohmand Agency have also started leaving their homes for safer places.

The migration of the tribesmen from different parts of Mohmand Agency started following a picket of paramilitary Khassadar force and a police station were bombed in Yakaghund subdivision of Lower Mohmand Agency on Thursday.

The destruction of the picket and police station panicked the tribesmen, who feared the security forces might launch an operation against the Taliban, reported The News.

Pak to ask US for a change in war expenses reimbursement mechanism

Islamabad, Aug 15: Noting that the US’ reimbursements for expenses incurred in global war on terror were not contributing to Pakistan’s economy, instead increasing its fiscal deficit, Islamabad is likely to soon propose changes to the US in its reimbursement mechanism, said the country’s Finance Minister Naveed Qamar.

Qamar’s statement assumed significance in the wake of recent reports that over 700 million dollars each year had been misused. He said that the reimbursement mechanism needed to be refined in line with the country’s economic constraints.

“We will take up this issue with Washington to review the mechanism,” The News quoted Qamar as saying.

Firing on India-Pakistan border

Firing on India-Pakistan borderSrinagar, India - Pakistani troops fired at Indian forward positions along a de facto border between the two countries in Jammu and Kashmir state early Friday, Indian officials said.

The Pakistani troops fired rockets and mortars at two places in forward areas of Jammu region, Indian Army sources said. There were no casualties.

Indian troops did not retaliate and a protest would be lodged with the Pakistani government, the sources said.

The line of control is a de facto border dividing the disputed Kashmir region into two parts, one administered by India and the other by Pakistan.

Musharraf’s spokesman rejects reports of his resignationIslamabad, Aug 15: Pakistan Presidency has reportedly refuted the recent reports suggesting that President Pervez Musharraf had decided to resign, especially after a deal brokered with the coalition government about providing him indemnity and security at his new residence on the outer-skirts of Islamabad.

Denying the reports, Presidential spokesman Rashid Qureshi described the reports published by the foreign media about Musharraf''s stepping down as “baseless”, reported the Dawn.
