Sun Network gets Ticket to enter DTH Business
Sun Network, India’s second biggest media network has entered into the DTH business space. The Sun Group provides DTH monthly services at just Rs 75, in addition to Rs 1,000 installation fee. That’s because it’s up against some serious rivalry
Vikram Kaushik, MD, Tata Sky told, “The south of India accounts for 40% of the pay-TV market in India, but we have also sold in other parts of the country where people are price conscious and want regional content and we have been very successful in those markets.”
Tata Sky and Essel Group’s Dish TV are the two leading players providing DTH services. As well, companies including Bharti airtel, Reliance, and Videocon are waiting backstage.
Industry figures indicate that DTH is likely to cover around 15 million subscribers by the next four years (2011), and the market is projected to develop from USD 1.5 to 3.5 billion.
Even though Sun’s DTH scheme looks attractive, it has not pleased everybody. For one, it provides primarily regional channels. For another, cable operators in the state seem to be miffed as they fear Sun might convert clients to DTH.
The related sources said that Sun might even end up its own cable network, SCV, once its DTH service makes headway
The Sun group seems to be a step ahead of its competitors. While the state government aspires to start its own cable operation, Sun has established DTH that is likely to be a big revolution in the pay-TV league.
