Sufi Mohammad meets Taliban leader Fazlulla chief to discuss ‘sharia-deal’

PakistanMingora, Feb. 19 : In a bid to convince the Taliban to disarm under `sharia-deal' between them and Pakistan Government, TNSM chief Sufi Muhammad met with Swat Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah at an undisclosed location on Thursday.

"They are discussing how to ensure peace and how to ensure the provision of speedy justice'' to the people," The Dawn quoted Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan, as saying.

On Wednesday, thousands of Sufi Mohammad supporters marched for peace in Pakistan's troubled Swat Valley. The march was led by Sufi Mohammad, the man who signed a deal to enforce Sharia law to end a bloody insurgency.

A Pakistani TV reporter who had been covering a peace march by Mohammad and his supporters was shot and killed. Authorities have not named any suspects in the killing of Musa Khan Khel, 28.

Muslim Khan condemned the killing, saying that whoever did it wanted to ''derail the peace process.''

The cleric left Mingora later Wednesday for the nearby town of Matta, where he was planned to meet Maulana Fazlullah and other Taliban leaders to persuade them to disarm.

According to the sharia deal' between Pakistan Government and the Taliban, the Taliban is required to end their bloody campaign after introduction of Islamic `sharia courts' in the Malakand and Kohistan districts of Swat.

Critics say the deal effectively cedes Swat to the Taliban and could embolden other militant groups challenging Pakistan''s shaky secular government. But Pakistani officials say the deal is no concession, arguing that it addresses long-standing demands for a more efficient justice system in Swat and surrounding areas.

A similar deal in the Swat last year collapsed after a few months and was blamed for giving time to insurgents to regroup. (ANI)
