Stock Markets Close Strong; NSE Nifty closes above 5300

BSE Sensex closes higherIndian Stock markets ended the day with decent gains. BSE Sensex closed above 18,115 with a gain of 348 points. NSE Nifty gained 100 points to end the week at 5302. Markets opened weak due to weak global cues.
Investors may feel some relief as the markets have gained over 1000 points in recent trading sessions. The recent rise in the stock markets has been broad based. The madcap and smallcap indices have also gained along with BSE Sensex.

Metal counters were strong in today’s trading session. Hindalco was major gainer with stock closing at Rs. 178.50 with a gain of 9%. IDBI was up by 7 percent at Rs. 120. Tata Steel gained 5% to end the day at Rs 818. Bajaj Auto, HMT, Hindustan Zinc, Sterlite Optical, Reliance Capital and SBI were among major gainers.

Pharmaceutical major Ranbaxy touched an intraday high of Rs. 399 and closed at Rs. 396.75 at National Stock Exchange.

Among major losers were Nicolas Piramal, Maruti Udyog, P&G, Suzlon Energy and Grasim. Maruti Udyog lost over 2% while Nicolas Piramal was down by 12%.

As per S&P reports, Indian stock market has been the fourth major loser among emerging markets during the meltdown of January 2008.
