SpaceX Prepares For Second 2016 Launch

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) is preparing to launch its second rocket of 2016 in February. The California-based company has boosted the manufacturing operations for its Falcon 9 rockets. The enhanced production activities are aimed at meeting the requirements of SpaceX’s contracts with NASA and commercial companies, worth a total of over $8 billion.

According to Luxembourg-based satellite communications operator SES SA, which is a client of the technology entrepreneur Elon Musk-owned and operated SpaceX, the latter is planning its second launch in February 24, 2016. A comprehensive range of assessment and pre-flight substantiation are being concluded by SpaceX, as per a statement revealed by SES.

SES-9 communications satellite will be carried by the Falcon 9 rocket during the company’s second scheduled launch. The satellite weighs 11,700-pound (5,300-kg) and has been manufactured by Boeing. Though SpaceX refused to give any comment on the launch, the company did reveal that during 2016, SpaceX plans to launch over 12 Falcon 9 rockets.

According to SpaceX, 2016 will also mark the introduction of its new heavy-lift booster, along with a third launch U.S. launch pad. "We're in this factory transformation to go from building six or eight (rocket cores) a year to about 18. By the end of this year, we should be at over 30 cores per year," said Gwynne Shotwell, the President of SpaceX, at a commercial space conference held by the Federal Aviation Administration. The main body of the rocket is called a rocket core.

During the launch for the SES satellite, the Falcon 9 rocket will go beyond the range and it will not be possible to land it back at the Florida launch site. Thus, SpaceX is again planning to attempt the landing of the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on a platform in the ocean. The company has already witnessed three failed attempts for landing rocket on the ocean platform.
