SpaceX Dragon Capsule carrying NASA Cargo to ISS to be launched on Tuesday
A SpaceX Dragon capsule having NASA cargo is scheduled to be launched to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Tuesday at 2.03 am (IST).
The sixth resupply mission will have ISSpresso coffee machine, experiments among other equipments. The mission will also attempt a reusable rocket landing attempt. As mentioned above, the Dragon spacecraft will also deliver research equipment for physical science, biology, biotechnology, human research and other technology demonstrations to the ISS.
Under a $ 1.6 billion-contract for resupply flights, it will be SpaceX's 12th delivery mission for NASA. The launch will act as the third attempt by the company to land a Falcon 9 rocket stage on a floating barge in the Atlantic Ocean.
The first attempt was made in January in which the returning rocket ran out of hydraulic fluid. Owing to which, the Falcon 9 rocket crashed into the drone ship. The next attempt was made next month. Bad weather affected the attempt and forced Space X to practice the landing over water.
Hans Koenigsmann, SpaceX vice president for mission assurance, was of the view that in the second attempt the weather was not good. But it seems that this time, the weather is significantly better. The rocket landing attempt is considered to be the company's effort to reduce the cost of spaceflight.
If all things go well then the Dragon capsule would arrive at the space station 38 hours after the lift-off. The coffee machine to be sent to ISS is a specially designed one, so that it can be used off earth.
"If a coffee machine comes back and we have a tendency to get a ton of nice comments from the crew. It's kind of like the ice cream factor", affirmed NASA's area station program deputy manager, Dan Hartman.
