Southern California Helium leak reveals Newport-Inglewood fault is deeper
It has been revealed that the Newport-Inglewood fault is deeper than what was considered earlier. Experts found this after a natural helium leak occurred in Southern California. As per reports, there is a direct line from the surface of Earth to its mantle.
It has been found by researchers that there are high levels of helium-3 in oil wells in Orange County that reach up to 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) deep. It is a 30-mile stretch from Los Angeles' Westside to Newport Beach. According to reports, Helium-3 is found in the Earth's mantle.
According to seismic experts, the helium doesn't inevitably indicate that the Newport-Inglewood fault has some bigger risk associated with it. It just reveals that there is much to be known, when it comes to the deepest sections of the fault.
According to the US Geological Survey's Ken Hudnut, who was not related to the study, this will help them understand more about the deep structure. As per Hudnut, "We all live here, in Los Angeles County, right on top of a whole bunch of active faults, and we're still stuck with inferring what the deep structure is. We don't have clear images".
As per Jim Boles, a professor emeritus of earth sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the fault was greatly linked.
The findings could be applied for the underground structure of the Los Angeles basin. Boles said that geologists thought that the area was having a low-angle thrust fault, however it seems that the Newport-Inglewood fault goes deeper. The study has not come up with changes in earthquake predictions in Southern California.
