SOHO captures Sungrazer comet plunging into the Sun
The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) attained success in capturing pictures of a sun grazer comet sinking into the Sun, a celestial event rarely captured on camera by astronomers.
Despite the encounter being too close to the Sun for human eyes to see, SOHO has observed the action with the help of an opaque disk to block the star's glare and even managed to click photos of this event.
Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE), C B Devgun said that SOHO, which is a joint mission by NASA and the European Space Agency; is a spacecraft unveiled to observe the sun.
Devgun added that large sungrazers are capable of surviving many perihelion passages, while small sungrazer comets get completely evaporated during such an encounter with the Sun.
It was on 12th March when the event took place. During the process, a newly-discovered sun grazer comet which is believed to be a part of Kreutz group of comets, plunged into the Sun and got completely destroyed.
