Smithsonian Institution has taken a step forward to preserve the spacesuit astronaut Neil Armstrong wore when he created history by stepping on the moon. The spacesuit needs to be preserved well because it was designed for short-term use with materials that break down over time.

It has been said that in its first Kickstarter campaign, the Smithsonian Institution is asking for $500,000 to conserve, digitize and display Neil Armstrong's spacesuit.

The campaign dubbed 'Reboot the Suit' was launched on Monday, which was marked as the anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the Purdue University graduate's first steps on the moon.

According to the organizers of the campaign, the money raised through it will be used by experts to help preserve Armstrong's Apollo 11 spacesuit. Money will also be used to display it in a climate-controlled environment and 3-D scan its components to create an interactive Web display.

Although the museum is supported federally and also has an annual budget, the cost of preserving the suit isn't included in its funding. Last year the museum asked Congress for $810 million.

It has been told that people who will make contribution to the campaign will also get some rewards, including a file for the 3-D print of your own copy of Armstrong's glove, exclusive museum events and the chance to see the suit in person inside the climate controlled conservation lab.

The campaign in just a few days has raised more than $$275,000, told sources. The original suits are kept in a controlled environment for preservation.
