Slumdog’s Rubina to be homeless soon
London, Oct 7 : Rubina Ali, who played the young Latika in Danny Boyle’s Oscar winning flick Slumdog Millionaire, may soon be homeless.
It is because of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai’s plans to bulldoze her slum and build a new township over it.
The shanty of the nine-year-old Rubina was earlier razed to the ground in May, only to be restored on popular demand later.
However, things may not be so bright this time around, as the slum is scheduled for an October 16 cleanup.
Although, Boyle set up a Jai Ho Trust to help the child stars of his movie, Rafique Qureshi, Rubina’s father, has alleged that the trust has not given them the promised sum of 36,000 pounds for a new home.
The Scotsman quoted him as saying: "There is no house in sight and we are still being forced to live in this slum."
Dinesh Dubey, the manager of the child artists of Slumdog Millionaire, says the Jai Ho trust is "not paying attention to their needs and keeping them in the dark about actual payments and agreements after the film hit the jackpot".
However, trustee Noshir Dadrawala defends the trust.
He says: "Mr Qureshi and Mr Dubey met me last week and we made the offer (of money to build a house] again, but they refused.
"They are insisting for some illogical reason on staying on in East Bandra and touting Rubina''s school as an excuse. We were even ready to pay them transport fees. Now, if they are out on the streets, they have only themselves to blame."
The little Rubina is quite bewildered.
She says: "I am confused. Pray for us." (ANI)
