Officials in Indonesia stated that several thousands of people had a miserable Eid today after six airports including in the country's second-biggest city were closed down due to volcanic eruptions.

It has been told that the international airport in Surabaya, the largest city after the capital Jakarta, and other four small airports were closed after the eruption of Mount Raung on the main island of Java.

The transport ministry said in a statement that the airport on the remote, eastern island of Ternate was also shut due to ash drifting from erupting Mount Gamalama.

Travelers at these airports who were planning to join their families for the final night of the Islamic fasting month had to spend the night in packed airport terminals. Many of those exhausted travelers were even seen sleeping on the floor.

Officials said that the international airports in Surabaya and a smaller airport in East Java reopened today. But the others remained closed prolonging the travel chaos.

Airlines have warned passengers at the reopened terminals to expect significant delays, with dozens of flights backed up until the late afternoon.

It was found that Indonesian flag carrier Garuda was due to resume its flights to and from Surabaya this afternoon, and had chartered two larger planes to help clear the backlog on its more popular routes.

But flights to the closed airports have been cancelled, with Garuda promising to evaluate the situation as it develops. The airlines said, “Garuda Indonesia flights to and from destinations will only be resumed as each airport is reopened by the competent authority”.
