Singapore man in court for emailing al-Qaeda threats

Singapore man in court for emailing al-Qaeda threatsSingapore  - A Singapore court is seeking a further psychiatric report on a 40-year-old man who sent out emails threatening airlines and the US government, claiming to speak for al-Qaeda, the Straits Times reported Saturday.

The court has put off sentencing Josemaria Miguel Ye Yong Qiang whose sent emails threatening Irish Air Arann and US Delta Airlines, as well as the US embassy in Canberra.

In September 2008 he sent an email glorifying the New York terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to the White House, identifying himself as an al-Qaeda member.

His emails, sent from a Singapore internet cafe, ended with: "Death of All Americans & Jews!!! Long Live Al-Qaeda!!!!!."

Ye's lawyer pleaded for leniency saying his client suffered from a major psychiatric illness at the time. The court was told that the unemployed man wanted to inconvenience American and European airlines, out of frustration for having been bullied by some of his white colleagues while working and studying abroad.

Ye faces a fine up of 100,000 Singapore dollars (66,000 US dollars) and a jail term of up to five years for each of the 21 charges he faces. (dpa)
