Sharapova through to second round of LA Open

Sharapova through to second round of LA OpenThree times Grand Slam champion, Russia's Maria Sharapova has stormed into the second round of the LA Women's Tennis Championships in Los Angeles. Sharapova ousted Jarmila Groth 6-0 6-4 in first round match on Tuesday.

Sharapova has just recovered from a shoulder injury due to which she was out of the action for the last nine months. Sharapova will now clash with the third seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in second round match.

Sharapova was looking in awesome flow as she won the first set without losing even a single point. But, she failed to continue her good show in the second set and she registered win after tailing by 4-3.

After winning the match Sharapova said that her plan was to play attacking game but she was unable to do that consistently in the match.

Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic outplayed 15th seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3 7-6 (7-4) and American qualifier Jill Craybas defeated 16th seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 to move into second round.

Meanwhile, France's Marion Bartoli has ruled herself out of the tournament due to a calf injury.
