Seven Japanese automakers considering brake override systems

Seven Japanese automakers considering brake override systemsThey are considering the addition of brake override systems for their vehicles to prevent sudden acceleration problems, said Seven Japanese automakers.

Kyodo News reported on Thursday that Honda Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Corp., Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Daihatsu Motor Co. and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., in the wake of massive recalls concerning speed control issues that have created months of negative publicity for Toyota Motor Corp., have said they are considering outfitting vehicles with system in which the brakes would work even if the gas pedal was depressed. Mazda Motor Corp. has already decided to install the systems in new cars and has weighed out the option of installing them in cars already on the road. Nissan Motor Co. already includes the system on all models.

A Mazda spokesperson said,'' Although our vehicles have not experienced incidents of wild acceleration ... we have decided to add the systems to our cars to further enhance their safety."

Kyodo further reported that in Europe, Volkswagen AG, BMW AG and Daimler AG already include override systems in their vehicles. In the United States, Chrysler Group, General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. install the systems in some, but not all, vehicles. (With Inputs from Agencies)
