Servers To Get Low-Power Chips Launched By Intel

New server processors are soon to be shipped by Intel, which are thought of consuming as little as 12.5 watts per core. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices are of the viewpoint, that in the present era, it is very important to get a device that delivers maximum performance with minimum consumption.

Intel said in a statement, “New additions to the Xeon 5000 Series include the L5430 and X5270 processors, the fastest of which boasts a clock speed of 3.5GHz.”

According to Intel, the new L5430 consumes only 50 watts of power or just 12.5 watts per second, whereas the dual-core Xeon X5270 uses only 80 watts.

Intel also confirmed, “Much of the energy efficiency these new processors provide comes from Intel's...45 (nanometer) manufacturing capability and its reinvented transistors that use a Hafnium-based high-k metal gate formula. Transistors with high-k metal gates can control current leakage better than those with silicon dioxide gates, which Intel had used in the past.”

Other than this, Intel also plans to ship the X5492, which consumes 150 watts. Though it consumes more energy, it delivers really fine performance.

These chips will be provided to, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Fujitsu-Siemens, Gigabyte, HP, IBM, Microstar, NEC, Quanta, Rackable Systems, Sun Microsystems, Supermicro, Tyan, and Verari Systems. The new processors are aimed at organizations, which use workstation and mainstream and blade servers.

The price tag for a quad-core Xeon L5430 (2.66GHz) may reach up to $562, whereas a quad-core Xeon X5492 (3.4GHz), will b priced at $1,493.
