Sensex Gains 40.40 Pts At 8,735.93
Indian equities continued to trade in the positive zone because of strong buying action witnessed in index heavyweights.
Short-covering prior to expiry of November series derivatives contracts has contributed significantly to the rise in stock prices this afternoon.
Oil & gas, banking, FMCG stocks went up, while auto and consumer goods stocks saw profit booking.
BSE Midcap and Smallcap index lost 0.88% and 1.13% respectively.
The 30-share index BSE Sensex today belled the day positively with a gain of 72.67 points, at 8,768.20 after losing 2.33% on the previous working day.
At 02:09 p.m., Sensex gained 40.40 points at 8,735.93, after touching a high of 8,837.00 and a low of 8,658.53. Meanwhile the broad based Nifty stood at 2,677.35, up 23.35 points, after hitting a high of 2,699.55 and a low of 2,643.35. (02.09 p.m.)
Overall market breadth was negative as it saw 1,270 declinations as against 722 advancements.
The major gainers in the 30-share index were Sterlite Industries (India) (5.96%), Wipro (3.93%), ICICI Bank (3.70%), HDFC Bank (3.43%), Bharti Airtel (2.24%), and Reliance Industries (1.72%).
On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra (5.11%), Maruti Suzuki India (4.77%), Reliance Communications (4.07%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.56%), Tata Steel (2.52%), and Infosys Technologies (2.45%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
