Sensex Gains 132.95 Pts; Nifty Closes At 5,640.05The 30-share index Sensex, on Thursday, closed in green after registering a gain of 132.95 points.

The Sensex hit the most prominent level in more than two-and-a-half years as a rebound in Asian bourses gave a boost to the sentiments at the markets.

The BSE Sensex closed at 18,799.66, the highest closing level since Jan 2008.

During the week, the stock index registered a gain of 3.08% or 561 points.

In contrast, the broad-based Nifty gained 32.20 points (0.57%) to close the week above 5600 mark at 5,640.05.

Broader market indices also witnessed good buys during the truncated trading week.

The top gainers on the 30-share index comprised M&M, which gained 3.16%; SBI surged 3.05%; HDFC Bank increased by 2.67% and ICICI Bank remained up by 2.48%.

The losers' list consisted of Cipla, which declined 1.68%; Tata Motors shed 1.58%; Rel Infra lost 1.30% and ACC slipped 1.13%.

The majority of Asian bourses gained with Japan's Nikkei recording a gain of 0.82%.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shut the shop at 21,167, up 0.37%.

But, the Chinese Shanghai Composite index dropped 1.44% to end the week at 2,656 points.

Indian bourses remained closed on Friday, 10 Sept 2010, owing to Ramzan Id.
