Sensex Ends Up 127.90 Pts; Nifty Gains 43.45 Pts
Indian equities closed the week on a positive note. Fag-end buying in sectors including IT, metals and refinery stocks assisted the benchmark Sensex to close up 128 points.
After gaining over 3%, IT stocks topped the list among sectoral indices. IT sector remained in the forefront following a continued fall in the Indian current to near the 52 level as compared to US dollar as big portion of their income comes from abroad.
The other gainers were BSE Oil&Gas (1.76%), Capital Goods (1.54%), Power (1.34%) and Metal (1.32%). Meanwhile, BSE FMCG (1.73%), Realty (0.89%) and Auto were draggers in the 30-share index.
Shares of Satyam Computer Services surged on reports of company getting SEBI’s nod to facilitate a worldwide competitive bidding process subject to receipt of all approvals, contemplates.
The company’s shares gained more than 19% to Rs 42.10.
BSE Midcap and Smallcaps however ended the week after losing 0.65% and 0.83% respectively.
The Sensex closed the week after making a gain of 127.90 points at 8,325.82. In contrast, the broad-based NSE Nifty gained 43.45 points at 2,620.15.
The BSE Sensex initially touched an intraday low of 8,047.17 because of weakness in Asian indices on account of a sharp decline on Wall Street.
The major gainers in the 30-share index included HDFC (6.40%), Hindalco Industries (4.38%), Jaiprakash Associates (4.27%), TCS (3.84%), Wipro (3.37%) and ONGC (3.31%).
On the other hand, the major losers list comprised Maruti Suzuki India (2.77%), Hindustan Unilever (2.65%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (2.15%), ITC (1.61%) and DLF (1.12%).
Asian stocks too marked their closure negatively following renewed concern losses at financial institutions will climb as the worldwide slump deepens.
Japanese benchmark index Nikkei lost 260.39 points at 7,173.10, whereas Hong Kong`s Hang Seng index dropped 289.72 points to 11,921.52.
European markets saw mixed trading trend. UK`s benchmark index FTSE 100 gained 9.76 points at 3,539.62. French benchmark index CAC 40 lost 18.38 points to 2,551.25, while Germany`s benchmark index DAX grew 14.43 points to 3,681.06.
