Scientists to study formation of a planet

Scientists will learn about the planet formation process and they will get to know about it from the very early stage of the process. As per reports, a young gas giant planet has been found and it is set in a disk consisting of gas and dust. The planet's young host star is surrounded by the disk.

Just one object has been observed by a high-resolution infrared camera at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile throughout a night and it is known that telescope time at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) on Mount Paranal is quite valuable.

A team of astronomers in Switzerland has made the discovery of the young gas giant. According to lead researcher Sascha Quanz, an astronomer at ETH Zurich, "It's a scenario we still can't rule out completely. But it's much less likely than our explanation, which suggests that what we're seeing is the birth of a planet. It provides us with unique observational data on what happens when a gas giant is formed".

Quanz added that they are now having a 'laboratory' that can provide them experimental data. The team led by Quanz confirmed its previous assumption by examining the dataset gathered by the instrument known as NACO. There hypothesis was that a huge planet candidate is orbiting the star HD 100546, which is a young star. The object is expected to be just five to ten million years old.

Quanz said that the object is still forming and is probably enclosed in a disk from where it is gathering material.
