Sarkozy and Medvedev call for new European security structure
Paris- French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Russian counterpart, Dmitri Medvedev, on Wednesday called for a new pan-European security structure.
At an international conference in the south-eastern French resort of Evian, Sarkozy called for a total reconstruction of the European security structure.
"We are ready to talk about it with the Russians," Sarkozy said, "because security in Europe and beyond is a common good."
Sarkozy went on to call for a summit of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to be held at the end of 2009 "to discuss (Russian) proposals and those of the European Union for new concepts of a pan-European defence."
Medvedev said at the conference that a pact on arms control, non-aggression and common security must guarantee all the principles in the UN Charter as well as the sovereignty of individual states.
No nation, not even Russia, and no organization such as NATO should have exclusive rights for the maintenance of peace and stability in Europe, the Russian president said. (dpa)
