Sania breezes into quarterfinal of Japan Open
Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has made into the quarterfinals of the women's singles event of the US $220,000 Japan Open as she ousted Ukraine's Viktoriya Kutuzova in straight sets in Japan on Wednesday.
Sania, who won her first Grand Slam title with Mahesh Bhupathi earlier this year, clocked just one hour and 23 minutes to defeat her opponent 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Both Sania and Kutuzova played poorly in the first set as both committed five double faults each.
However, Sania earned one breakpoint to take lead by 1-0 in the first set and raced away with the set.
Sania improved her game in the second set and she saved three out of four breakpoints. Kutuzova was once again unable to improve her serve as she committed three double faults apart from getting her serve broken thrice by Sania.
Sania will now face World number 12 and second seeded Marion Bartoli in the quarterfinal. Sania and Bartoli had met each other only once in 2005 US Open and Sania had won that match.
